Just wan to ask ddr2 533 m/b can support ddr2 667  or not?

Thanks

Syafiq, he's asking whether his m/b which is using DDR2 533 RAM can take DDR2 667 or not.

S/D:
Can you find out the brand & model of your mobo (if you don't have the manual)? The model should be written in the middle of the mobo somewhere. From there, go to it's website & look for the info.

I haven't seen a motherboard with combination of EDO & SDRAM before, only SDRAM & DDR. Some boards have both SD & DDR but only one type of RAM can be used at one time. A set of jumpers (or switch) will have to be set according to the type of RAM to be used.

About why EDO have to be used in pairs, I leave this question to the 'experts'.... hehehe

Wow! I don't remember you that young. Those 30pins & 72pins combo has been available in the era of pentium MMX, supported by the intel 443xX series chipset and sis chipset. Certain mobo allow the 30pins EDO RAMM to be installed together with the 72pins RAMM counter part.

I need to clarify that EDO RAM is also available in the 72pins modul format.

Regarding of EDO RAMM pairs, it's true since the memory path for pentium class processor is 64bit while 30pins RAMM is only 32bit. This technology is similar to RAMBUS or the current dual-channel DDR/DDR-II.

p/s: pin(s) on memory module is more towards edge contact rather than pin.

A few days ago, I was using Pentium-mmx. The specs are stated above. Then there is a problem with the m/board so now I am using another cpu that was kept in the store. The specs are:

Processor: Cyrix M II-550
Speed: 550Mhz
VGA Memory: 8MB
Ram: 56MB
HDD: 20GB
OS: Windows ME

At the bios setting there got cpu speed and cpu base frequency. What is the diff between them?
Can anybody give me the price now for items below:

P4 2.4Ghz+m/b
512MB ddram
17" Monitor
64MB GForce graphic card
ATX P4 casing

Thanks Smiley

Wat is atx casing? Huh If i change the motherboard, the cables n the positions of the sockets at the back of the cpu is the same arr? Huh Can i use back the old casing for com around year 1999/2000. N how to format the hdd as i onli got 1 hdd? Huh The m/b u mean comes with the processor or not?

Thanks.. Smiley

First thing first, what is your CPU? You haven't told us what type of CPU you have now. Is it Pentium 3, Pentium 2, Celeron, AMD or what? Can't tell much if you say 'you bought in 1999/2000' cos there's too many options nowadays for CPU.

The price I quoted is only for the motherboard. For reference, price for Pentium4 2.4Ghz processor is RM260.

If you intend to upgrade to a Pentium4 from Pentium3, the only thing you can use back from the old PC are:

1. Monitor
2. Keyboard/Mouse
3. Harddisk
4. Floppy Drive
5. CD/CDRW

For Pentium4, u need to have:

1. Power Supply Unit (PSU) for Pentium 4 - 400W & above.
2. DDRAM
3. AGP Graphic Card (or maybe PCI Express)
4. ATX Pentium 4 Casing (usually it comes with a PSU).

As for your question on how to format a single harddisk, you just need a 'bootable' Windows XP cd. Boot the PC with the CD in the drive. When the PC prompts whether you want to boot using the CD, press enter. From there, just follow the instruction on the screen. Format the harddisk using NTFS format, not FAT32.

BUT...... SAVE YOUR DATA BEFORE FORMATING/XP INSTALLATION.

I have aready found out the boards. There are 4 boards actually. They r EDO ram. Why when i take out all the EDO ram, the com cannot start n why must they in pairs? Where is the graphic card for my com? Huh

That means the EDO is the main RAM for the m/board. I haven't seen a motherboard with combination of EDO & SDRAM before, only SDRAM & DDR. Some boards have both SD & DDR but only one type of RAM can be used at one time. A set of jumpers (or switch) will have to be set according to the type of RAM to be used.

I still have some question here:
1. When i reinstall windows ME, it searhes for drivers at the beginning, then the com will hang. Every time i do this, the com sure will hang. Why?
2. My com often hangs, any way to solve this problem?
3. Is there any motherboard with cpu speed around 2.0Ghz that cost around RM200?
4. Does the all the new motherboards now have a built-in graphic card?
Thanks.. Smiley

1. & 2. I suspect it could be RAM. If it's corrupted system files, it won't happen during reinstallation of OS.
3. I presumed your CPU to be P4 or Celeron 2.0Ghz. There are few low-end m/board with that price. U need to shop around. Last week, I bought a m/board for P4 2.4Ghz, costing RM250. Can't tell u whether it can cater for 2.0 but usually it should be able to accomodate 2.0Ghz.
4. Low to medium-end motherboards usually come with intergrated grfx adapter, with shared RAM ranging from 32MB to 128MB (sharing with main RAMs). As for the hi-end m/boards, some are using PCI Express with dedicated 256MB graphic card (claims to be faster than normal AGP graphic card.

My advice: if u are buying m/boards with integrated graphic adapter, make sure the m/board have an AGP slot. This should cater for future upgrade, if u decide to buy a separate AGP card.

Fuh! Expert man! Like that aso u know. My com has 2 slots n  using two 32MB sdram. What is the difference between PC-133 n PC-100 for the sdram? The ram I know how to change bcoz my com used to run on 92MB of ram n the 64MB sdram spoil aready n I found a 32MB ram so i used it la. Is there a 256 sdram on a single ram? bcoz I think 1 slot is spoil aready. There are aso 3 small boards like ram, have a slot but they are a bit smaller. Are them actually rams?

Bukan expert, just happen to know & experienced it already.

A bit confusing on yr explaination. You said you have 92MB but 64MB spoilt & you replace with 32MB. So, both slots is ok la. I don't think you can find 256MB that easy nowadays. Unless you jadi 'tombs raider' & raid someone's old PC with SDRAM slots.

About the '3 small boards like ram, have a slot but they are a bit smaller', I'm not so sure about that thingy, sorry.

You are using Win ME with 64MB RAM (4MB shared with graphic). I think your motherboard have only 2 slots for RAM. If you can open up the casing, have a look whether both slots are occupied.

If both slots are being used, that means you have 2 pcs of 32MB RAM. Try to take out the RAM (there's a catch at both end of the RAM) & check how many notch at the bottom of the RAM.

If there's only 1 notch, then it's an EDO RAM. This type is very hard to get now. Furthermore, it have to be in pairs.

EDO (Extended Data Output) RAM:

If it looks like this:
SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic RAM)

then you can still find it. Prices range from RM230 to RM260 for a 256MB SDRAM.

New PC/motherboards uses DDR-SDRAM (Double Data Rate SDRAM), which looks like this:

or even RDRAM (RAMBUS Dynamic RAM):

The best way is to bring your PC (just the CPU box/casing) to a computer shop & ask if they can upgrade the RAM.

It's advisable to have at least 128MB (for your specs) or best is 256MB. I do believe you can still find the RAM for your PC.

But if you have RM1000 to spare, you can get a good spec PC:

AMD Sempron 2200
256MB DDRAM
Int. Graphic (Max Shared RAM:64MB)
Int. Sound
40GB Harddisk
Internal 56k Modem
52X CDROM
Floppy Drive
Stereo Speakers
PS2 Keyboard/Mouse
* No Monitor (add RM250 or more)

To me, the above specs is good enough to play Need For Speed 1.
