Grin Grin Cheesy Cheesy Angry Angry

Based on my office setup:
1. Router yg dial-up streamyx, samada on-demand or start of day.
2. Kalau pakai Internet Sharing, satu PC akan dijadikan Internet Gateway.... tapi akan melembabkan speed.

Expert2 Streamyx, tolong tambah tokok....

Saya nak setupkan LAN office untuk streamyx. Ikut Jamal, katanya guna switch bagi workstation lebih dari 4 sebab router cuma ada 4 ports:

                            Workstation
                                    |
                                    |
                                    |
Workstation----------Switch-------------Router---------ADSL Modem-------Internet
                                    |
                                    |
                                    |
                             Workstation

Question:

1. Bila setup streamyx, adakah mana-mana workstation boleh buat dial-up
2. Bolehkah XP Home digunakan atau XP Pro perlu untuk satu workstation (act as server)

Aku cadang nak bagi depa pakai cable je bila nak connect internet, then I can set "Obtain IP Auto" on their network config.
Amacam, boleh ke?

kalau ko dah ada WEP, mac add filtering di DHCP & AP , then senang jelaa...bila masa partnet sampai ..bagi dia access network guna cable ...senang....tapi IP ko kena setkan laa....pasal kalau ko taruk auto ip ...sampai bebila dia takkan dapat IP ...pasal DHCP takde mac add laptop tersebut ....ok ?

Aku terangkan balik network setup ofis aku:

1. Wireless router (Gigabyte) with 4 Ethernet ports, connected to Streamyx thru a broadband modem.
2. Current setup: 3 PCs on cable & 1 notebook on WIFI connection.
3. Router act as DHCP, with 50 IP termasuk IP utk router.
4. Set SSID to my company's name instead of 'default'.
5. Router/AP set to invisible to outside connections.
6. Speed of Streamyx unknown yet, my boss pandai2 subsribe without my knowledge. Bila ada problem, baru nak refer kat aku. All this while, dengar cakap member dia je.
7. Presumably, Streamyx is registered under personal, sebab dpt package RM88 with free modem.

Masalah aku kalau nak limit pakai MAC Address ialah, there will be partners with own notebook & WIFI, nak connect/tumpang Streamyx dari masa ke semasa.

Aku cadang nak bagi depa pakai cable je bila nak connect internet, then I can set "Obtain IP Auto" on their network config.

Amacam, boleh ke?

TQ

buat je laa mac address filtering kat AP tu ..senang skett...

lepas tu ko enablekan 128 bit encryption ... /..at least ada double protection ...

Aku tengah kerobek habis manual ni..... aku akan try satu persatu... lantak le org ofis aku tak dpt masuk internet sekejap. Janji aku puas hati... hehehehe

Ni masalahnya kalau org macam aku dapat belajo benda baru yg tak baru pada org lain. Maklum aje le, aku ni 'old school' IT Technician, sijil pun takde, semuanya belajo sendiri weh...

PS: Ni semua sebab Pak Ya le.... dia yg beli komputer XT dulu. Tiap kali aku cuti, mesti balik rumah dia dulu satu malam, baru balik rumah parents.... sampai merajuk arwah mak aku....

Aku jumpa satu artikel tentang wireless network:

Lock Down Your Home Network
(written by Patrick Norton on Wednesday, April 28, 2004)

Five tips that can keep snoops out of your system.

Odds are you lock the front door when you leave for work or go to sleep. That's simple safety. But although you safeguard your stereo, sofa, and family heirlooms, you may be leaving your personal data out in the open.

If you use an always-on broadband connection, anything on your computer and home network could be accessible to crafty snoops. Your privacy is compromised even more if you use a wireless connection. But I'm going to show you how to dead bolt your home network's front door and wedge a chair under the doorknob.

Tonight's episode of "The Screen Savers" is the Take Back Your Privacy Special. We'll discuss the state of privacy on the Internet and tell you what you can do to keep your personal information private. Read the rest of this article for a head start.

Secure your network in five easy steps:

1. Put a firewall between you and the Internet
Kevin and I both use simple home routers, such as the Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router. If you're feeling paranoid, you can load Linux on the router or run a more sophisticated (but more expensive) router.

SmoothWall offers a free download to turn an older PC into a pretty serious firewall for your home network. We've even written an article about how to do it. It's simpler than running a software firewall on your desktop (although Zone Labs' ZoneAlarm offers a great free firewall if you don't want to install a hardware router), and it protects all the machines inside your home.

On cable broadband, using some kind of firewall is crucial. Without a firewall between you and the cable network, anybody on the same node has access to your home network!

2. Ethernet is more secure than wireless
There's a reason the main security system for 802.11b, WEP, is called "Wireless Equivalency Protocol." It's because it's easy to tap into radio waves from outside a building. WEP encrypts data to make it more secure, but it's nowhere near as secure as is data transmitted through wired networks.

Tapping into wires from outside is considerably harder. If you're feeling superparanoid, skip wireless. At the very least, buy wireless products based on something more secure than WEP, such as the newer Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) standard.

3. Lock down MAC addresses in addition to using WEP
WEP may sound secure in the manual that comes in the box, but it's not that hard to crack. However, you can configure your wireless access point to allow access only to specified media access control (MAC) addresses, which are unique identifiers assigned to each hardware device on your network.

Using WEP or locking down Wi-Fi by MAC addresses will only keep out casual snoopers. Folks with time on their hands can sniff the addys or crack your WEP password using common tools such as KisMac or AirSnort. That said, using WEP and MAC addresses to lock down your WAP will drive many folks to find simpler networks to poke around in.

4. Keep your software and firmware updated
Whether it's your operating system, Web browser, router software, or any other piece of software you run, you must install the latest updates (aka firmware)!

These updates make your system more secure, which is a good thing, since as soon as the patches are announced, some annoying people go looking for unpatched systems to attack.

5. Don't be too paranoid
Seriously. Chances are nobody wants to get inside your home network. More importantly, if you've covered the security basics, casual hackers and script kiddies will skip your network. They'll go after the low-hanging fruit: Folks who didn't bother with steps 1 through 4.

AP = Access point  --> router + wifi + swith etc.
IP = intenet protocol
IE = internet explorer

lah after berjela cite last last pakai mac filtering jugak hehehehe
err..model number ?
anyway kat dalam manual die akan cakap pasal filtering tu dan macam mana nak access router,
pakai IE jek masuk router tu.

cuba accept upon request pada rules on ip configuration en Jamal .... bukak network properties read semua mesti jumpa the rules...cuba satu....saya rasa tanpa software harus boleh...masalah saya kekadang guna MAC kekadang gun UNIX nanti saya double check untuk en jamal di mana nak setup rules di os windows....err en jamal guna windows XP ka?

........... masih mencari.........

Quote
p/s bro Jamal : Patut pakai limited MAC Address access pada AP ke?...err IP bukan AP IP stands for Internet Protocol bro...pembetulan...limit kan aja biar padan muka org lain nak try tak boleh !...heheh biar kedekut janji tak berjanggut dan semput bayar bil dan surfing...ok bro?

Ooppss... maksud saya setting on limited MAC Add perlu dibuat pada router tu. Tentang janggut, memang dah banyak kali cukur tapi 3-4 hari akan tumbuh balik. Entah2 dah tersampuk dgn Rosdi tak? Hmmm... entah le...

Ofis saya ambik package RM88 with modem. Initially, I can control sebab buat Internet Sharing. Tapi ada yg degil jugak walau telah diberi amaran, duk pegi tempat haram, tempat banyak benda 'Free Download... mari mari...' bos pun sudah naik angin sebab pakai Streamyx tapi speed macam pakai 33.6 je. Mana taknya, bila scan pakai Giant AntiSpyware, bersusun macam semut nak balik sarang je list of Spyware & Adware!

Tiada masalah tentang bil, cuma tak mahu kawasan D'sara Kim tu akan diiklankan sebagai HotSpot pulak nanti.

Anyway, thanks for the advise. Hari Jumaat ni nak buat bab MAC Add. tu pulak. Lagi satu perkara, macamana nak monitor network users? Maksudnya, nak tengok sapa conquer line. Dgn cara itu, rasanya boleh detect PC mana yg ada 'suspicious activity', boleh di'format'kan.... hahahah...... aku tak nak cuci sikit2, nak kasi hapus terus segalanya.....

Ciao & Thanks
